Thirteen hours

That’s how much time it took to overhaul this website. There is still work to be done – the most important to populate the portfolios – but I believe there are no errors. I started with Dreamweaver many years ago, with help – then moved to WordPress ten years ago, doing the work myself, and upgrading the theme perhaps twice after the conversion. This remodel was a lot of changes, with a little very careful editing of the theme coding and some custom css, using the help forum. It’s much more attractive than before, and more modern in appearance. I used Shapely, a one-page WordPress theme with Jetpack portfolio for image management. I’d make improvements that broke it, and then have to back track – but that’s coding.

I know just enough to be a little bit dangerous, and a little bit fearless – but I’m not careless. I backed up the website, and then also dowloaded it. In my pre-conversion reading, I learned that taking screenshots was a good way to make sure settings and the like converted. Okay, 38 screenshots taken. I worked ten hours over two nights (after eight hours of my paid job), and got it mostly done. After three more hours this afternoon, I can hesitantly say – it works!

I needed one more image to make the “about me” text work correctly. Pretty colors. That drinking cup of blue beads is a vintage Italian greasy turquoise, and the orange is a vintage French opal citrus. The skein of yarn is reclaimed silk saris, and the cones are all cotton yarns. They all make me very happy. My name at the top of this blog post, or “home,” will show you the pretty front page. Enjoy.

  1. Way to go and a high five for doing it yourself. It looks fantastic! Mine is due for an overhaul very soon.

    • Thank you! Oh my goodness, it’s a bit nerve-wracking to do a significant change like this. And, now I know comments work. I can check that off my list, thank you. 🙂
