Fossilized Coral Cabochon

This has been a project in process for years. For no easily definable reason, I never finished this fossilized coral necklace. A number of years ago, I received an email or a print advertisement from my local lapidary, and I loved the coral cab that they had used in something. I asked for them to cut me a cab, as I really liked it. In addition, I purchased faceted carnelian beads (the larger beads) and faceted red agate beads, which I presume are dyed (the smaller beads). I had everything done of the embroidery except part of the outer row. I just completed that, plus the backing with fringe, and strung the necklace. The completed pendant is 3″ long, and the clasp is sterling.

I took this picture in very bright light, trying to show the tones of red that I used. Red can be difficult, but these shades of red are working well together, I believe.

A closeup, to show the fossilized coral. Also, the beads on the outer edge are vintage French opals. They are fantastic. Would I have done this differently if I started it today? Perhaps. But, now I have a finished necklace.
