The Surface Design Association’s Winter 2022 journal issue celebrated “Traditions & Techniques in Beading,” with beautiful cover art by Catherine Blackburn.

To complement the issue, Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA) hosted a Textile Talk with Anette Millington and Sébastien Carré. Millington speaks of her class at the Parsons MFA program on beading material and meaning, featuring work by her students. Carré speaks of his work.

Feature articles are on Kelly Dzioba, Nafis M. White, David Chatt, contemporary indigenous beading, and Sanaa Gateja. In the Departments section are other articles, including the speakers in the Textile Talk by SAQA linked above.

In Spring 2003, Surface Design also did a bead issue, “Beaded Surfaces,” with cover art by NanC Meinhart. Feature articles are “The Maturing of a Medium” by Valerie Hector, “The Challenge of 3-D Beadwork” by Wendy Ellsworth, and about Laura Willits, Jon Eric Riis, Genevieve Dion, The Beaded Prayer Project by Sonya Clark, and “Bead Design in the Digital Age” by Leslie Rogalski.

The newer issue is available for purchase. The older issue is not, but perhaps it can be found secondhand. I have both, and they are beautiful and inspiring.
