Spontaneous Generation: Liam Lee at the Ongunquit Museum of American Art
The Ogunquit Museum of American Art is a fantastic museum in Ogunquit, Maine. It is a beautifully designed midcentury building, low-slung with gorgeous gardens with sculptures, and panoramic windows front and back to take advantage of its spectacular coastal view.
From the information on this exhibition of artwork by Liam Lee: “Spontaneous Generation refers to the alchemical belief that living organisms could suddenly emerge from non-living materials. Prior to modern, scientific understandings of microbiology, the theory tried to account for the emergence of microbial life everywhere, even in seemingly sealed and sterile environments. Advocates of spontaneous generation blurred the boundaries between the organic and inorganic to explain their wonderment at life’s ubiquity and vibrancy.”
In the works I photographed, Liam Lee’s wallhangings and chairs are constructed from dyed and needle felted wool. The woven mohair background is airy and fuzzy, and the needle felted elements look firm and solid – a very pleasing contrast.
Spontaneous Generation will be on display until November 12. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
